What can Guardsmen learn from the “Goat Man”?

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. – “What is the best marketing practices for selling goats?” asked a young Mr. Pinkerton to the leading goat producer of Texas.

“When I catch them I sell them,” replied the farmer.

Mr. Frank Pinkerton, known as the “Goat Man” to farmers around the country, has supplied some of his knowledge to the Agribusiness Development Team 4 as they prepare to depart for Afghanistan. Pinkerton spoke at Third Thursday at the Kentucky State University Farm to local farmers.  Maj. Ben Singleton, Master Sgt. Chris Campbell, Staff Sgt. Catherine Corson, Sgt. Bruce Garcia and Tech. Sgt. Michael Herrell were also in attendance.

Pinkerton discussed specific marketing strategies, such as getting your nanny goats to give birth in time to have them  ready for sale during the Easter Holiday season.  Another strategy discussed techniques of selling to a local market instead of the national commercial market.  Ways to maximize profit was the underlying message.

The deploying Guard members intend to take the lessons learned from these sessions to Afghanistan to help local Afghan farmers convert their subsistence farming operations to commercial farming endeavors.

The marketing and production strategies promoted by the “Goat Man” will be sure to work in Afghanistan as well as here in the United States.
